The Society of Integrative Urology (SIU) is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 dedicated to advancing urologic care. The purpose of the SIU is to advance research, education and clinical practice in Integrative Urology.
Throughout our careers, we have helped patients using an integrative holistic approach to treating prostate cancer. Unfortunately, the majority of urologists rely solely on surgery and pharmaceuticals. They do not take the time to review the scientific research on holistic treatments, dismiss prevention as a non-possibility and fail to advise their patients on lifestyle changes, diet, exercise and the use of science-backed nutraceuticals as a means of prevention or complimentary therapy. We believe that 80% of prostate cancer surgeries in the United States are unnecessary.
For these reasons, the founders have decided it to make it their mission to increase patient access to holistic treatments. With more than 200,000 new cases of prostate cancer cases and more than 1.3 million other types of cancers diagnosed every year, we believe that there is potential to help tens of thousands of men and women. Apart from the enormous human costs, cancer costs our health care system over $260 billion a year, highlighting the importance of prevention, something that the majority of doctors do not focus on.
The mission of the SIU has two specific initiatives. First, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating urologists about the benefits of holistic treatments of prostate cancer and other urological cancers that affect both men and women. Second, the key founders of the SIU will educate cancer patients and the general public on holistic treatments of cancer and other health conditions and on the role of prevention. They have chosen to donate their time and personal resources these initiatives to make a social impact and to give back to our society.
